Despite the naysayers, the band has already achieved enormous success, bagging their first Grammy less than two years after signing a record deal when their second EP, From the Fires, won Best Rock Album in 2019.īy that point, they had already released their full-length debut, 2018′s Anthem for the Peaceful Army, and were well on their way to stardom. Wagner was a late addition to Greta Van Fleet (replacing original drummer Kyle Hauck in late 2013), who did indeed find their feet as a band in the garage of the Kiszka family home. “We didn’t even really have lessons for our instruments.” “But from a foundational standpoint, I guess we are very throwback, because we were one of those bands that formed in a garage – and you don’t hear that a lot any more.” He shrugs. “I’m a very optimistic person and very glass-half-full, so when I hear those things, I know in a certain sense they’re talking about the fashion and the music,” he concedes. A dedicated golfer when he’s not behind the drumkit – golf not being your average rock star’s customary extracurricular pursuit – you get the feeling that it would take a lot to rile him. “I actually do take it as a compliment,” says the pleasant, laidback Wagner. Their detractors have witheringly accused them of being little more than a “throwback” band, merely aping an older sound but offering nothing new. The rock band comprised of Wagner (who plays drums) and the three Kiszka brothers Josh and Jake (who are twins) and Sam have managed to put their hometown on the map for musical reasons, thanks to their bluesy hard rock sound and hits such as Highway Tune and When the Curtain Falls. ![]() It’s quite the little cute tourist town, though.” “But it’s also this little Bavarian-themed town, and all of the architecture has to meet Bavarian-themed requirements – even the McDonald’s. “Most people know it as ‘Christmastown’, because apparently the largest Christmas store in the world is located there,” explains Danny Wagner. Even so, I think The Falling Sky, The Indigo Streak and Meeting the Master are some of their best songs yet.Until recently, the town of Frankenmuth, Michigan was known primarily for its quaint, tourist-oriented shtick. Overall a solid album even if the songwriting and production isn’t up to par with the others. ![]() Hopefully they perform the full song live at some point. Apparently Josh didn’t like the song but the other members did so they compromised by putting only half of the song on the album? Pretty lame and I wish they would’ve just cut the song entirely instead of doing that. One thing I fail to understand is why Runway Blues was cut short to less than a minute and a half. I think Starcatcher has some of Greta’s heaviest riffs yet. I was disappointed by the obvious Zeppelin rips in a couple of the singles, but for the most part the other songs on the album sound pretty original to me. The mix is also very poor, which isn’t much of a surprise to me considering how bad the newest Slash album Dave Cobb also produced sounds. Having listened to the new album a few times now, I like the songs but I don’t think the writing is quite on the level of the previous albums. They are definitely a band to keep an eye on. Overall, I'm genuinely excited to see how Greta Van Fleet continues to evolve and carve their own path in the music industry. This shows their commitment to creativity and innovation. What I find particularly intriguing is that GVF is pushing forward with some orchestral elements in their music, exploring territories that even Led Zeppelin didn't fully delve into. It goes to show that every band has its own unique journey of exploration and development. Interestingly, it reminds me of how, around 50 years ago, Led Zeppelin was initially considered a clone of early blues music, and Rush was seen as a Led Zeppelin clone. It's a great way to introduce these iconic influences to a new generation of music lovers. I believe it's commendable that they are staying true to their own musical style and preferences while incorporating elements from legendary bands like Led Zeppelin and Rush. It's evident that they are evolving and growing with time. This new album feels more relaxed compared to their previous one, which I also really enjoyed. ![]() The DR numbers are terrible.Ĭlick to expand.I share the same impression.
